Following the recent passing of Brunei’s first dental surgeon Dr Chin Yam Chin, the Embassy of Japan in Brunei Darussalam shared a memoriam in honour of Dr Chin’s contribution towards enhancing Brunei-Japan relations.

In the late 1960’s Dr Chin departed the Sultanate to spend a year of intensive Japanese study in Tokyo followed by six years of study at the National Tokyo and Dental University majoringin Dentistry.

After completing his studies, Dr Chin returned to the sultanate and was employed at the Bruneian health service until 1986.

Despite leaving Japan many years prior, Brunei remained an important country to him.
Dr Chin was one of the five founding members to help Pengiran Setia Negara Pengiran Dr Haji Mohd Yusof bin Pengiran Haji Abdul Rahim establish the Brunei Association of Japanese Alumni (BAJA) in 1986.

As an active member of the association, Dr Chin went on to become the association’s president and remained involved throughout his life.

In recognition of his effort, Japan awarded the decoration of The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays for his contribution to promote friendly relations and mutual understanding.

The Embassy of Japan in Brunei Darussalam offers its deep condolences to the family and friends of Dr Chin Yam Chin during this difficult time.
